The team is working to understand the cellular properties and mechanisms that transiently induce differentiated cells into 2C/totipotent-like plasticity that enables self-assembly as synthetic embryos. Using their unique system that reprograms primed pluripotent stem cells, they are studying conditions that may improve the induction of 2C/totipotent-like gene expression and total plasticity. They will further evaluate how such transient cells may develop blastocyst-like cell lineages (trophoblasts / primitive endoderm / epiblast) and to what extent such synthetic embryos may represent true life forms.
